The indigenous Havasupai people call the canyon containing this waterfall home. In English, Havasu means ‘blue green water’ and pai ‘people’, which makes the literal translation of Havasupai to mean People of the Blue Green Water. The water contains high amounts of the mineral calcium carbonate. This is also the mineral responsible for creating the travertine dams and pools shown in the photo. Unfortunately a series of floods starting in 2008 destroyed most of the pools seen here, but they do slowly grow back.
